Safety in Paradise.

Funny, just the other day I was at the Perth Holiday and Travel show and one of the things Dave and I chatted about was taking a holiday to New Zealand.

We’d love to do a campervan trip and travel at leisure around the north and south islands, and we kept on being drawn back to the New Zealand stand.

Lo and behold look what we saw in passing!

Now I’m not saying that I want to learn to do the Haka (the traditional ancestral war cry and dance  from the Māori people of New Zealand) although it might be fun, but there’s much on my bucket list of “to do’s” for a trip to the green and pleasant land that’s even further down under.

So while we were on the train going back to Mandurah (where we’d parked the car for the day) below, we chatted more about where we’d like to go on holiday next and the Cook Islands also come up in passing … Meanwhile we sat on the waterfront in Mandurah …

And of course thinking about holidays involves food and wine – how about this lovely plate of chilli mussels we had at the Stage Door in Mandurah right on the waterfront.

As I was investigating flights later on, of course I came across Air New Zealand, and as chance would have it I was asked today to take the wraps off the brand spanking new safety video.

It sure does put a different spin on the old boring airline safety videos, you know the ones when you keep your head buried in the inflight magazine when you know you should really be watching.

Well this one is different – particularly for the fellas. It will have them oggling because it’s been put together in collaboration with Sports Illustrated’s iconic Swimsuit franchise to mark its 50th anniversary.  The video called “Safety in Paradise” was shot in the picturesque Cook Islands and features some of the biggest names in modelling.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Editor MJ Day says . “Our partnership with Air New Zealand is brilliant in every way. We were able to create a raucous safety video in the true spirit of SI Swimsuit and our Kiwi friends,” says Ms Day.

OK girls, you’ve probably heard of the models who feature and they are gorgeous:  Chrissy Teigen, Ariel Meredith, Hannah Davis and Jessica Gomes along with one of the original supermodels and three time Sports Illustrated cover girl, Christie Brinkley who makes a cameo appearance.  She’s still beautiful, and I think she’s around 60 years old?

Anyway, here’s a sneak preview of the video which is a little racy, and will be rolled out on Air New Zealand flights at the end of February. If you like swimsuits or super models and a little bit of fun, then this one’s for you.

“It’s exciting for us to release the full video today and we hope it will encourage many viewers to consider a trip to the Cook Islands,” says Jodi Williams, Air New Zealand Global Head of Brand Development.

I’ve never thought of visiting the Cook Islands but it’s a key Pacific Island destination for Air New Zealand. The airline  has operated flights there for more than 40 years. Hmm, maybe it’s time to go!

About Star Alliance:  Air New Zealand is  a member of Star Alliance. The Star Alliance network was established in 1997 as the  global airline alliance to offer worldwide reach to the international traveller.

To celebrate the launch of Safety in Paradise Air New Zealand is giving online viewers the chance to win one of five trips for two to the Cook Islands. For more information and to enter, visit  The Flying Social Network.

For now dear ZigaZagers, good luck in the competition and … please today …

  1. Johanna, I wanted to send you my sincerest, heart felt feelings for the stress you had to endure sitting with that view and somehow managing to have the appetite for that plate of chilli mussels! You poor lady! Ok…the video. Woo hoo! If they offer a Hannah Davis and Jessica Gomes package deal I’m in! 🙂

  2. Air New Zealand are definitely a little ahead of the game when it comes to keeping our attention on safety matters!
I’ve seen a few – one with Bear Grylls and the Old School one!! 🙂

  3. Thank you for your sincerest, heart felt feelings for my terrible stress looking at that view with those chilli mussels! Such a hard life 😉 Mike! If that New Zealand package deal you like the sound of comes in, I’ll let you know! (By the way, I’ll pop by to your blog next week)

  4. Neva Fels

Now that’s quite an entertaining video – for my husband. I demand equal “candy eye” time. If men have the most white knuckle problems with flight, Air New Zealand has that problem covered.

  5. This video is so funny, what a good idea…. I think they need to do a blokey version for us ladies to ogle… very funny. I must admit to having stopped watching safety videos, very naughty. Great to have some humour involved PLUS the very spectacular Cook Islands. I haven’t been there but my Kiwi chums rave about it.

  6. Wouldn’t a blokey version be fun Seanna! Yes, the video reminded me that the Cook Islands would be a great place to visit too 🙂

  7. The video seems to have inspired a few of us to think about the Cook Islands, Kathy 🙂

  8. Ha Ha Neva – yes, perhaps they are enticing more men to travel too – as you say, the problem of ‘flying jitters’ is solved for menfolk.

  9. Oh I wish I’d seen that one, Jenny! I bet it was funny. Oh yes, you’d love the mussels I reckon – wonder if you’ve tried that little restaurant in Mandurah?

  10. Air New Zealand has certainly been putting out some effective flight safety videos lately. I enjoyed the one based on Lord of the Rings. Not much eye candy for the ladies in that video, so I will have to satisfy myself by staring at your photo of chili mussels.

  11. Looks fantastic, I’ve always wanted to go to New Zealand and for free, will sign up thanks

  12. Great Noel, and I bet if you get there, your photography of New Zealand would be awesome 🙂

  13. Ha Ha Michele, yes, I thought the chili mussels was a reasonably good alternative picture and idea to put in for some of the ladies! I didn’t see the Lord of the Rings one … they are inventive aren’t they.

  14. The mussels look good! I was in NZ in 1980, and have always wanted to go back. Star Alliance is my FF brand, and I have a lot of points right now. Maybe NZ would be a good option…hmmm. 🙂

  15. Brilliant… and a bit of muscle among the beauties. Something for everyone! I’ve been to the Cook Islands and it’s one of those places I would break my “never twice” rule for. (I already broke it for NZ several times) The people and the place is as beautiful as the video shows.

  16. You’ve just tipped the balance from ‘might go’ to ‘have to go’ for me Tracey! Thanks for popping by 🙂

  17. Wow, Annabel getting married on the Cooke Islands would be amazing, but Vanuatu sounds just incredible too! Idyllic – so different from the traditional, although perhaps beach and exotic weddings are becoming the tradition in the southern hemisphere.

  18. Thanks for this post Jo. I had seen this video some time ago, but was too stumped for words. I had to retreat before commenting. It just goes to show what can be achieved with an imaginative idea, high production values, and a bit of humour thrown in!

  19. I was a bit stumped to begin with, Wanda – until I started giggling!
