Diverse, inclusive and definitely cosmopolitan, that’s Bunbury. And for those of you who hail from South Africa who may still not have kicked the habit for biltong or boerewors, nik naks or Mrs Ball’s Chutney (include me in here) then fear not because Les and Robyn Hogan of South African Fine Foods in Prinsep Street have a whole host of favourite South African products all under one roof.
I popped in today and bought some Rooibos tea (favoured by Mma Ramotswe in Alexander McCall Smith’s books, ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series) and was tempted by tantalising tid bits on shelves stocked with old friends that I once would have found at Pick ‘n Pay or Checkers in Cape Town.

On the counter was an easy microwave recipe for Mealie Bread (great for barbies) which Les and Robyn have offered to share here.
Mealie Bread
2 eggs
3tsp baking powder
Half cup milk
1 cup mealie meal
1 cup flour
4 tsp brown sugar
Half tsp salt
420gm tin Koo sweetcorn
Mix egg, milk and sweetcorn
Sift in dry ingredients and mix with egg mixture.
Add sugar and mix well.
Microwave on high for 12 minutes.
Butter and serve.
Now don’t go all teary eyed and soft on me, rather let me know of any favourite South African recipes that you’d like to share?
