“If you go down to the woods today, you’ll be sure of a big surprise,” so goes the children’s Teddy Bears’ Picnic song. And if you are of cultural persuasion and looking for interesting things to do in Western Australia, you may very well be surprised by the treasure trove of arts and very fine crafts to be found at Boranup Gallery near Margaret River, deep in the heart of  magnificent Karri woodlands.

What will I find?

Tucked away in the heart of  Boranup forest you’ll find a rammed earth gallery, in a small clearing, which at first sight may appear insignificant. It’s not. Inside you’ll discover paintings, sculptures, glass work and all manner of craftworks by Australia’s leading designers/makers and artists, with prices ranging from the serious ‘collectors’ tag, right down to the ‘small birthday gift’ price. There is furniture too, lots of it; marri, blackbutt, jarrah, beautifully hand crafted on site. The sort of furniture you immediately want to touch as you explore the burlwood inlays and solid timber construction.

Cafe on site

While you’re there you may like to ponder your purchases and visit the Boranup Cafe next door for a coffee and snack, or perhaps lunch, sitting outside in summer on the wooden deck built out under the tall karri trees, and listen to the birdsong and rustle of the tranquil, native forest surrounding you.

Who’s the gallery for?

Die hard city slickers looking for a unique cultural experience or art investment

Holidaymakers in search of beautiful gifts to take home

Locals, for a wonderful array of home-grown art and craft work available on your doorstep. (Owner James Howieson has an interesting modern day pioneering story to relate about how he packed up his life as a teacher to follow his dream of making and selling his own furniture created from  native timbers. After many setbacks during the design and home-build of the rammed earth gallery, it was officially opened in 1989.)

Take a credit card, you are bound to use it. On the other hand, lock your credit card up for the day. The trouble is, you’ll probably return again soon – credit card in tow! And if you don’t, well, worry not. Boranup ships worldwide.
