The Stingrays of Hamelin Bay

Picture this … a white sandy beach …the sea, a duck-egg-shell blue, and warm waves licking the tips of your toes.

Heaven. But it gets better. There are Stingrays in the shallows…. One, two, four, six, maybe more.

They’re huge and quite flat, like submerged black bin liners with big eyes. But be careful, for they have a dangerous barb in their tail, and if aggravated they’ll use it.

A cautionary tale; crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin, was killed by a Stingray.

So avoiding their tails and standing close enough to merely marvel and wonder, we watch the Stingrays as they glide around perhaps waiting for the fishermen cleaning their catch on the beach to throw the fish heads back into the ocean.

I look up. The scene is perfection. Like I said, white sandy beach, duck-egg-shell blue sea, warm last of summer sun, and Stingrays. What a day.

“It’s such a perfect day.” Lou Reed.

Thanks, Lo. Hamlin Bay is lovely and the Stingrays are amazing, but please make sure your little lad is careful, and particularly stays well away from their tails and those dangerous barbs because the Stingrays are quite active and mobile. If you walk up the beach a little, there’s a private cave/overhang too – great for a ‘pirate’ picnic. Oh, and Hamlin Bay has a camp site and chalets right close to the beach. All the best, Johanna x

We will be in Hamelin on 10 June, do you think we will be able to see some stingrays during our trip?

  4. Love, love, love the sting rays at Hamelin Bay! I’m writing yet another article on them right now (though I might now publish it for a while).

    Hope you’re keeping well, Jo.
